Forest Field Days

Many teachers find that outdoor experiences serve as a hook to get students excited about learning and to relate what they learn in the classroom to real life.  Our forests offer a wide array of educational opportunities.  Using PLT activities to support forest field days, teachers and youth group leaders help our young people to understand math, science, and social studies concepts and provide endless opportunities for integrating reading and writing skills.

The Resource Guide for Conducting a Forest Field Day provides practical guidance and resources for teachers and others conducting forest field days at their schools and other sites.  The guide may be downloaded in its entirety (above) or in the following sections.

In addition, over 100 landowners and foresters in NH are willing to host or lead groups of school-age children on forests in nearly every town in NH.  The contact information for these individuals is available by contacting the PLT office directly.

Dear Foresters,
Thank you for guiding us through the forest and teaching us about trees.  I enjoyed learning how to identify trees.  I didn’t know you could identify a tree by its leaves.  I also liked learning about the clinometers and knowing how to measure the diameter of a tree.  I never knew turkeys ate acorns, and that squirrels made tables out of tree stumps to eat their food.  Also, I never knew that squirrels ate pine cones; I thought they only ate acorns.  I guess they need a variety of food, too!  The tree cookies you gave us were cool because you can count the rings to find its age.  Thank you for teaching us about the trees and the animal habitats.
Sincerely,
5th Grade Student
