Richard Verney
Richard Verney doesn’t remember when he first heard about Project Learning Tree, but its mission to educate our youth has always been important to him. As the second generation owner of Monadnock Paper Mills in Bennington, he worries that our youth misunderstand the value of working forests.
“Trees are America’s renewable resource. They protect soil, provide recreational benefits, and give a home to wildlife.” They also provide the material that allows us to build homes, make paper, and generate power. A well managed forest allows us to meet many of society’s needs. “Project Learning Tree helps our kids to understand the realities of our forests.”
Monadnock Paper Mills manufactures premium, high performance papers on the banks of the Contoocook River in Bennington. The Verney family acquired the mill in 1948. Richard assumed leadership at the mill in 1969. He and his wife, a school teacher, raised their family in the home his father built to accommodate and entertain visiting businessmen.
